SGRRU was established as a state private university through an Act of the Uttarakhand State Legislature, which gives it the authority to award its own degrees in accordance with the regulations of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India.
The university is organised into multiple faculties and schools that include programmes in:
The Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, a multi-specialty teaching hospital in Patel Nagar, Dehradun, is associated with the medical and nursing programmes operated by the Mission.
The principal campus is situated in Dehradun, in the Doon Valley at the foothills of the Garhwal Himalaya. The city is a major educational hub in northern India and is home to several other universities and research institutes.
As a private institution chartered by the state, SGRRU contributes to higher education access in Uttarakhand, particularly in professional disciplines such as medicine, pharmacy, nursing and management. Its links with the Shri Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib also make it part of the wider religious and cultural heritage of Dehradun.
