The university was established by an Act of the Gujarat Legislature to promote advanced study and research in Sanskrit, Vedic studies, and traditional Indian knowledge systems. Its founding reflected a broader policy in Gujarat of creating discipline-specific state universities, paralleling earlier institutions devoted to law, forensic sciences, and other specialised fields. Locating the university at Somnath, a major pilgrimage centre on the Saurashtra coast, was intended to integrate the institution with the long-standing religious and scholarly heritage of the region.
The university offers programmes at certificate, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Its curriculum typically covers traditional shastras alongside modern academic methods, including:
The university also affiliates and recognises pathshalas and Sanskrit institutions in Gujarat, bringing traditional gurukula-style learning within a formal academic framework.
Research activity at the university focuses on manuscript studies, textual criticism, philosophy, and the application of Sanskrit knowledge to contemporary fields. The institution organises seminars, workshops, and shastrartha sabhas, and engages in publication of scholarly editions and translations. Outreach programmes are aimed at schoolteachers, priests, and lay learners, supporting the wider promotion of Sanskrit literacy in the state.
As one of a small number of dedicated Sanskrit universities in India, Shree Somnath Sanskrit University plays a notable role in preserving and modernising the study of classical Indian knowledge traditions. Its situation at Somnath links academic activity with one of the most important sacred sites on the western coast of India, and it functions as an institutional anchor for traditional scholarship in the Saurashtra region.
