Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar is a district in the Doaba region of the Indian state of Punjab. The district lies in the Bist Doab tract, the land between the Beas and Sutlej rivers. It was carved out as a separate district from portions of the older Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur districts. In 2008, the Government of Punjab renamed the district from Nawanshahr to Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar in honour of the revolutionary, whose family home and memorial are preserved at Khatkar Kalan.
The district is administratively organised into sub-divisions (tehsils) based at Nawanshahr, Banga and Balachaur, and is further divided into community development blocks. Nawanshahr serves as the seat of the Deputy Commissioner and the principal civil and police administration. The district forms part of the Jalandhar revenue division.
Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar is bordered by Hoshiarpur district to the north, Rupnagar district to the east and southeast, Ludhiana district to the south across the Sutlej, and Jalandhar district to the west. The terrain is largely a fertile alluvial plain typical of Doaba, with the eastern and northeastern fringes rising into the lower Shivalik foothills around Balachaur. Agriculture, dominated by wheat, paddy, sugarcane and potato cultivation, is the main economic activity.
The population is predominantly Punjabi, with Punjabi written in the Gurmukhi script as the principal language. The district has a significant Sikh population alongside Hindu and other communities. Doaba, of which the district is a part, is well known for high rates of overseas migration, particularly to the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and Italy, and remittances and diaspora links influence local society and economy.
Beyond its administrative role, the district holds symbolic importance in modern Indian history because of its association with Bhagat Singh and the wider revolutionary movement against British rule. The 2008 renaming was part of a broader effort by the state government to commemorate figures of the Indian independence movement in Punjab's public geography.
