Shahdol is situated on the Sone river basin, in a largely undulating, forested tract of the Vindhyan plateau. The district shares borders with Umaria, Anuppur, Dindori, and Rewa districts of Madhya Pradesh, and lies close to the Chhattisgarh border to the east. The terrain is characterised by mixed deciduous forest, coal-bearing strata associated with the Sohagpur coalfield, and tribal-cultivated agricultural land.
Shahdol is the headquarters of Shahdol district, which forms part of the Shahdol division of Madhya Pradesh, along with Anuppur and Umaria districts. The district was carved out of the erstwhile Rewa region after the reorganisation of states, and Anuppur district was later separated from Shahdol in 2003. The city is governed by a municipal council (Nagar Palika Parishad) and is the seat of district-level offices, courts, and police administration.
The economy of Shahdol is closely tied to coal mining, forest produce, agriculture, and trade. The Sohagpur coalfield, operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has collieries in and around the district. Tendu leaf collection, mahua, and timber are important non-timber forest products contributing to rural livelihoods. The city also functions as a market centre for the surrounding agrarian and tribal hinterland.
Shahdol is served by Shahdol Junction railway station on the Bilaspur–Katni line of the South East Central Railway, providing connectivity to Bilaspur, Katni, Jabalpur, and onward destinations. The city is connected by state and national highways to Anuppur, Umaria, Rewa, and Bilaspur. The nearest major airports are at Jabalpur and Bilaspur.
Shahdol district has a substantial Scheduled Tribe population, with the Gond and Baiga communities being prominent. Hindi is the principal language of administration and education, while Bagheli is widely spoken in everyday use. The city hosts educational institutions including degree colleges affiliated to state universities and an Indira Gandhi National Tribal University regional campus serving the area.
The region around Shahdol preserves traditions of tribal art, music, and dance, including Karma and Saila performances associated with the Gond and Baiga peoples. Local fairs and festivals reflect a blend of Bagheli and tribal cultural practices. The wider Baghelkhand region is also known for archaeological remains from the Kalachuri and earlier periods, including temple sites in nearby districts.
Shahdol is part of the Shahdol Lok Sabha constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Tribes. The city falls within the Jaisinghnagar or Jaitpur assembly segments depending on delimitation, with several constituencies in the district reserved for Scheduled Tribes in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
