Before entering films, Shaam established himself as a professional model. His modelling career served as the springboard for his transition into the film industry in the early 2000s.
Shaam made his acting debut with 12B in 2001. He went on to appear in lead roles in a series of Tamil films, including Lesa Lesa (2003), Iyarkai (2003) and Ullam Ketkumae (2005).
Shaam received wide acclaim for his role in the Telugu film Kick (2009), after which he came to be popularly referred to as Kick Shaam. The success of Kick opened the door to further prominent Telugu projects, including Race Gurram (2014).
Following a hiatus, Shaam returned to Tamil cinema with 6 (2013), and subsequently appeared in Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai (2015) and Varisu (2023).
Shaam is among the relatively small group of contemporary actors whose careers have spanned both Tamil and Telugu film industries in lead capacities, with extensions into Kannada and Malayalam cinema. The popularity of Kick in particular gave him a recognisable on-screen identity in Telugu cinema, while his Tamil filmography reflects work across romantic dramas, social subjects and mainstream commercial films.
