Satwiksairaj was born in Amalapuram, in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. He took up badminton at an early age, encouraged by his family's involvement in the sport, and trained at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad, which has produced several leading Indian shuttlers. He represented India in junior international circuits before transitioning to senior competition.
Satwiksairaj established himself in the junior circuit through performances in national and international tournaments. He was identified at the national level for his powerful smashing game, which later became a defining feature of his men's doubles play.
Satwiksairaj began partnering Chirag Shetty in men's doubles, and the pair gradually rose through the BWF rankings to become one of the top doubles combinations in the world. They have won multiple titles on the BWF World Tour, including events at the Super 500 and Super 750 levels, and were the first Indian pair to win the Indonesia Open, a Super 1000 tournament.
The duo also achieved a historic medal for India in men's doubles at the BWF World Championships, becoming the first Indian men's doubles pair to do so. They reached the world No. 1 ranking in men's doubles, another first for Indian badminton in this category.
Satwiksairaj has also played mixed doubles for India in select tournaments and team events, partnering Indian women's doubles specialists such as Ashwini Ponnappa.
Satwiksairaj is regarded as one of the hardest hitters in international badminton, with a smash recognised among the fastest recorded in the sport. He generally plays from the rear court in the men's doubles formation, using his attacking strokes to complement Chirag Shetty's net play and defensive movement.
Along with Chirag Shetty, Satwiksairaj has played a central role in raising the profile of doubles badminton in India, a discipline historically overshadowed by singles successes. Their results at the World Championships, World Tour Finals qualification, World Tour titles, and major multi-sport events have placed Indian men's doubles among the competitive units on the global circuit.
