Satna is situated on the northern fringe of the Kaimur range in the Bagelkhand plateau. The terrain around the city is broadly undulating, with limestone-rich strata that have shaped its industrial profile. The Tons river system drains the surrounding region, and the city itself takes its name from the small Satna river that flows past it.
The climate is tropical, with hot summers, a monsoon season between June and September, and relatively cool winters. Satna is connected by the Howrah–Allahabad–Mumbai line of the Indian Railways, with Satna Junction being one of the more important stops on this route. National Highway connections link the city with Rewa, Prayagraj (Allahabad), Jabalpur and Khajuraho.
The area around Satna historically formed part of Bagelkhand, a region ruled by the Baghela Rajputs whose principal seat was at Rewa. During the British period, several small princely states of the Bagelkhand Agency, including Nagod, Maihar, Sohawal and others, lay in the immediate vicinity of present-day Satna. After Indian independence and the integration of the princely states, the region became part of Vindhya Pradesh, and from 1956 it was incorporated into the reorganised state of Madhya Pradesh. Satna district was constituted with Satna town as its headquarters.
Satna is widely identified with the cement industry, owing to extensive limestone deposits in the district. Several large cement plants operated by major Indian companies are located in and around the city, making it one of the largest cement-producing clusters in central India. Allied industries include cement-based building products and limestone quarrying. Trade in agricultural produce, small-scale manufacturing and services connected to the district administration also contribute to the local economy.
The city is administered by a municipal corporation (Nagar Nigam). Satna is the headquarters of Satna district, which is part of the Rewa division. The Satna Lok Sabha constituency sends a member to the lower house of the Indian Parliament, and the city forms part of a Vidhan Sabha constituency in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
Satna serves as a convenient base for several culturally significant sites in the surrounding districts:
Bagheli, a dialect of Hindi, is the principal local language, alongside standard Hindi used in administration and education.
Satna hosts a number of colleges affiliated to universities of Madhya Pradesh, along with technical and management institutes. The city has schools run by the central, state and private boards, and serves as a regional educational centre for surrounding rural areas.
Satna Junction is a significant railway station on the West Central Railway, providing direct connectivity to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Varanasi, Jabalpur and other major cities. By road, the city is linked to Rewa, Prayagraj, Khajuraho, Panna and Chitrakoot. The nearest commonly used airports are at Khajuraho, Jabalpur and Prayagraj.
