Madhya Pradesh has, since the mid-2000s, encouraged the establishment of private universities through dedicated state legislation governing their incorporation, regulation and academic standards. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan University was set up within this framework as a self-financed state private university based in Bhopal. As with other universities of this category, it operates as a unitary institution, with academic activities confined to its own campus rather than through affiliated colleges.
The university organises its teaching through faculties and schools covering broad academic areas. Programmes commonly offered at such universities include:
Courses are typically structured at the diploma, bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels, in line with the norms of the University Grants Commission and the relevant statutory professional councils such as the All India Council for Technical Education, Pharmacy Council of India, Bar Council of India and National Council for Teacher Education, depending on the programme concerned.
The university is situated in Bhopal, which is the administrative and educational hub of Madhya Pradesh and home to several public and private universities, including Barkatullah University, the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology and a number of state private universities.
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan University is part of the wider expansion of higher education capacity in central India through the state private university route. Institutions of this type have contributed to broadening access to professional and technical education in Madhya Pradesh, particularly outside the traditional public university system.
