Sardar Singh is a former Indian field hockey player who served as the captain of the Indian national team across multiple international tournaments. A central midfielder known for his stamina, ball distribution and reading of the game, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential Indian hockey players of his generation. He represented India at the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Hockey World Cup, and was honoured with the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna.

Sardar Singh was born in 1986 in Sant Nagar village in the Sirsa district of Haryana. He took up hockey at a young age, following his elder brother Didar Singh, who also played the sport at a senior level. He developed his game through Haryana's domestic structure before being selected for the national setup.
Sardar Singh made his senior debut for India in 2006. He soon established himself in the midfield with his distribution, work-rate and ability to switch play. His technical reading of the game made him a regular fixture in the Indian lineup.
He was appointed captain of the Indian senior men's hockey team in 2008, becoming one of the youngest players to lead the side. He led India in major tournaments including the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games and the Hockey World Cup.
In the franchise-based Hockey India League, Sardar Singh played for Delhi Waveriders. He was among the high-profile Indian players in the league and contributed in central midfield across multiple seasons.
In 2008, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) named him in its World XI side, making him one of the youngest players from India to receive the honour. He was nominated for the FIH Player of the Year award on more than one occasion during his playing years.
After being left out of the Indian squad for the 2018 Asian Games gold medal contention phase later in his career, Sardar Singh announced his retirement from international hockey in September 2018.
