Sardar Patel University (SPU) is a public state university located in Vallabh Vidyanagar, in the Anand district of Gujarat, India. The university is named after the Indian statesman Vallabhbhai Patel and serves as a centre of higher education in the region.
The university was established in October 1955 through an Act of the Legislative Assembly of the then-Bombay Province. At the time of its founding, it was set up with the status of a rural university, with a focus on extending higher education to students from the surrounding rural areas of Gujarat.
Sardar Patel University was recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act in October 1968. This recognition formally placed the institution within the framework of universities eligible for UGC support and oversight in India.
