The daughter of actor Saif Ali Khan and actress Amrita Singh, she made her acting debut in 2018 with Abhishek Kapoor's Kedarnath and quickly followed it with Rohit Shetty's Simmba the same year, establishing herself as a leading actress in mainstream Hindi cinema.

Background and education

Sara Ali Khan was born in Mumbai on 12 August 1995. She belongs to the Pataudi family; her paternal grandparents are the cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore. Her parents separated when she was a child, and she was raised primarily by her mother, Amrita Singh.

She attended Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai and went on to study at Columbia University in New York City, where she graduated with a degree in history and political science. She returned to India to pursue a career in acting.

Career

Debut and early work (2018–2019)

Sara made her screen debut in Kedarnath (2018), directed by Abhishek Kapoor, in which she played Mukku, a Hindu girl who falls in love with a Muslim porter played by Sushant Singh Rajput, set against the backdrop of the 2013 Uttarakhand floods. Her performance earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

Within weeks of her first release, she appeared in Rohit Shetty's police action film Simmba (2018) opposite Ranveer Singh. The film became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year. In 2020, she starred in Imtiaz Ali's Love Aaj Kal opposite Kartik Aaryan, a spiritual sequel to the 2009 film of the same name.

Her later filmography includes Coolie No. 1 (2020), directed by David Dhawan, opposite Varun Dhawan; Atrangi Re (2021), directed by Aanand L. Rai, in which she shared the screen with Akshay Kumar and Dhanush; Gaslight (2023), a thriller co-starring Vikrant Massey; Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (2023), opposite Vicky Kaushal; and Murder Mubarak (2024), directed by Homi Adajania.

Sara Ali Khan is known in popular media for her appearances on the chat show Koffee with Karan, hosted by Karan Johar, and for her active social media presence.
