The Sanskrit College and University is a state public university located in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, India. The institution traces its lineage to the historic Sanskrit College, one of the oldest centres of Sanskrit learning in eastern India, which was upgraded to full university status in the twenty-first century. The university focuses primarily on Sanskrit language and literature, classical Indian knowledge systems, and allied disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.

The university grew out of the Sanskrit College, an institution established in the early nineteenth century during the colonial period to promote the formal study of Sanskrit and traditional Indian learning. Over the decades, the college became associated with several prominent figures in Bengali intellectual and social reform movements and developed a strong reputation in śāstric scholarship, including grammar (vyākaraṇa), philosophy (darśana), and literature (sāhitya).
The transition from a college to a full-fledged university was undertaken by the Government of West Bengal in order to expand the scope of advanced study and research in Sanskrit and related areas, and to consolidate teaching, research, and degree-granting functions within a single autonomous body.
The Sanskrit College and University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. While its core strength lies in Sanskrit, the curriculum extends to associated fields such as Pali, classical Indian philosophy, ancient Indian history and culture, linguistics, and selected languages and literatures. Departments combine traditional methods of textual study with modern academic research practices.
As one of the few universities in India dedicated specifically to Sanskrit and classical Indian learning, the institution plays an important role in preserving manuscript traditions, supporting śāstric scholarship, and training teachers and researchers in fields where specialised expertise is increasingly rare. It also contributes to the broader academic ecosystem of Kolkata, a city historically associated with Bengali and Indological scholarship.
