Ghosh comes from a Bengali family and was raised in Mumbai. She entered the entertainment industry in her late teens, beginning with modelling assignments and music videos before moving to television, which was undergoing rapid expansion in India following the growth of cable and satellite channels in the 1990s.
Ghosh became widely recognised for her role as Anvesha "Anu" Shergill in Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, a Star Plus serial that ran in the early 2000s and was among the popular daily soaps of its time. She subsequently played important roles in Ekta Kapoor's Kkusum on Sony Entertainment Television, and led Pyaar Ka Bandhan, also on Sony.
One of her most prominent roles was the title character in Jhansi Ki Rani, a historical drama on Zee TV based on the life of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, in which she portrayed the queen in adulthood. She also headlined the supernatural-mystery serial Kaal Bhairav Rahasya on Star Bharat. In 2022 she returned to lead television with Swaran Ghar on Colors TV, playing a middle-aged widow, a role that was noted for its mature characterisation.
In addition to fiction shows, Ghosh has participated in non-fiction and reality formats, including dance-based programmes on Indian television.
Ghosh has appeared in a small number of Hindi films, though her career has remained primarily anchored in television. Her film appearances are generally regarded as supporting work alongside her serial roles.
Sangita Ghosh married businessman Aditya Singh Rajput in 2014. The couple has a daughter.
As one of the recognisable faces of the Indian daily soap era of the 2000s, Ghosh's career reflects the trajectory of the female lead actress in Hindi general entertainment television: from family drama soaps in the early 2000s, through historical and mythological serials in the 2010s, to mature, age-appropriate lead roles in the 2020s. Her portrayal of Rani Lakshmibai contributed to renewed mainstream television interest in dramatised Indian historical figures.
