Background

The university takes its name from the Sangai, the brow-antlered deer (Rucervus eldii eldii) that is the state animal of Manipur and a cultural symbol of the region. The institution is situated in Churachandpur district, a hill district in southern Manipur with a population that includes a number of indigenous communities such as the Kuki, Zomi, Hmar and Paite peoples.

As a private university, Sangai International University was constituted under a state legislative framework that enables the establishment of self-financed universities in Manipur. Such universities are empowered to award degrees recognised under the relevant provisions of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act.

Academics

The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in fields that typically include arts and humanities, commerce, management, science, education, and information technology, organised through faculties and schools on its campus in Churachandpur.

Significance

Sangai International University contributes to the expansion of higher education access in Manipur, particularly for students from the hill districts of the state, where institutional options have historically been fewer than in the Imphal valley. Its presence in Churachandpur situates it within a regional educational network that also includes government and centrally funded institutions across the North-East.
