Sanchi University of Buddhist-Indic Studies (SUBIS) is a state university situated at Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh, India. It was established in 2013 by the Government of Madhya Pradesh under the Sanchi University of Buddhist-Indic Studies Act, 2012, with a focus on Buddhist and Indic studies.
The foundation stone of the university was laid on 21 September 2012 by the then President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa. The visit drew protests from the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which opposed the Sri Lankan president's presence on the occasion.
The university has been headed by successive vice-chancellors since its early years of operation. Yajneshwar Shastri was appointed as vice-chancellor in July 2016. He was succeeded by Neerja Arun Gupta, who was appointed to the position in February 2022.
Located in the historic town of Sanchi, known for its ancient Buddhist stupas and monuments, the university was conceived as an institution dedicated to teaching and research in the traditions, texts and philosophies associated with Buddhist and broader Indic studies.
