The plant was established as a unit of SAIL to meet the growing demand for stainless steel and special grades of flat products in India. It was conceived to reduce dependence on imports of high-value flat-rolled stainless steel and to promote indigenous capability in special steels manufacturing. The choice of Salem was influenced by the proximity of the region to sources of raw materials, including iron ore and chromite, and to industrial markets in southern India.
The Salem Steel Plant operates cold rolling and hot rolling facilities for the production of stainless steel sheets and coils. Its product range includes:
The plant supplies material to manufacturers in sectors such as kitchenware and household appliances, transportation, construction, and chemical and process industries.
As a unit of SAIL, the plant functions under the company's Special Steels vertical alongside the Alloy Steels Plant at Durgapur and the Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant at Bhadravati. It procures hot-rolled stainless steel slabs and coils for further processing and also undertakes value addition through finishing operations such as annealing, pickling, skin passing, slitting and polishing.
Salem Steel Plant is one of the few large-scale producers of stainless steel flat products in India and plays a strategic role in import substitution. Its output supports a wide downstream ecosystem of small and medium enterprises, particularly in southern India, that fabricate stainless steel goods for domestic and export markets. As part of a public sector enterprise, it also contributes to regional industrial employment in Tamil Nadu.
