The first part establishes the political geography of Khansaar, the bond between the two protagonists, and the events that set the stage for an internal war addressed in the sequel.

Production

The project was officially announced in 2020 as a collaboration between Prabhas, Prashanth Neel and Hombale Films, the team behind the K.G.F series. Principal photography commenced in early 2021 and was conducted across multiple schedules in Hyderabad, Mysuru, Godavari districts, Pollachi and other locations in southern India. The shoot was extended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the elaborate scale of action set-pieces. In July 2023, the makers confirmed that the film would be released as a two-part feature, with the first instalment carrying the subtitle Ceasefire.

Music

The background score and soundtrack were composed by Ravi Basrur, who had earlier worked with Neel on the K.G.F films. The audio was released on the Hombale Music label.

Release

After being initially announced for an earlier 2023 release, the film opened worldwide on 22 December 2023. It was released in the original Telugu version along with simultaneous dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. Post-theatrical streaming rights were acquired by Netflix, while satellite rights were divided across regional broadcasters.

Reception

The film opened to large-scale audience turnout in both southern Indian markets and the Hindi belt. Critical response was mixed to positive, with reviewers highlighting the action choreography, world-building, production design and the screen pairing of Prabhas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, while some critiques focused on the dense exposition and the deferred resolution carried over to the second part. The film is widely regarded as one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2023.

Sequel

Salaar: Part 2 – Shouryaanga Parvam was announced as a direct continuation, with most of the principal cast reprising their roles. The cliffhanger ending of Ceasefire, which introduces the larger geopolitical conflict involving Khansaar's external rivals, sets up the events of the sequel.

Significance

The film marked Prashanth Neel's first project outside the K.G.F franchise and his debut in Telugu cinema as a director. It also represented a major pan-Indian release for Hombale Films, consolidating the studio's strategy of producing large-budget multilingual action sagas. For Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film was a high-profile entry into Telugu cinema, while for Prabhas it continued his run of pan-Indian projects following Baahubali.
