The foundations of the group lie in the launch of the Marathi daily Sakal at Pune on 1 January 1932 by Dr. Nanasaheb Parulekar. The newspaper grew into one of Maharashtra's leading dailies, with editions covering major cities and districts of the state. Around this flagship title, the broader Sakal Media Group developed as a corporate entity overseeing publishing, allied print products, and newer media ventures.
The group's print portfolio is anchored by Sakal, which has multiple regional editions across Maharashtra including Pune, Mumbai, Nashik, Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), Kolhapur, Nagpur, Solapur and other centres. In addition to the main daily, the group has launched supplements, periodicals, and youth-oriented and lifestyle publications over the years.
Beyond newspapers, Sakal Media Group operates digital news platforms and has interests in event management, agribusiness-related media (notably Agrowon, a Marathi daily focused on agriculture), and other community-oriented content. Initiatives such as Young Inspirators Network and various social engagement programmes have been associated with the group.
As one of the oldest continuously published Marathi dailies, Sakal has played a notable role in shaping public discourse, regional journalism, and the Marathi readership market in Maharashtra. The group is often cited alongside other major Marathi media houses in discussions of regional language journalism in India, and its agriculture-focused publication has had particular influence among rural and farming readerships.
