Saidapet is a neighbourhood and administrative locality in the city of Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Situated on the southern bank of the Adyar River, it is one of the older suburbs of Chennai and serves as the headquarters of the Saidapet taluk in Chennai district. The area functions as an important transit and commercial node, lying along Anna Salai (Mount Road) and at the junction of several arterial routes connecting central Chennai with its southern and western suburbs.

Saidapet lies on the southern bank of the Adyar River, opposite Nandanam and Kotturpuram. It is bordered by Guindy to the south-west, T. Nagar to the north-east, Little Mount and Alandur to the south, and Kotturpuram to the east. Anna Salai (formerly Mount Road) passes through the locality and crosses the Adyar via the Maraimalai Adigalar Bridge (commonly known as the Saidapet Bridge), historically one of the principal river crossings on the southward route from George Town.
The name Saidapet is generally traced to Saidapettai, a settlement associated with Sayyid families during the Nawab of the Carnatic period. Under colonial administration the area lay outside the original municipal limits of Madras and developed as a separate township. Saidapet served as the headquarters of the erstwhile Chingleput district during much of the British period before later administrative reorganisation. The Saidapet municipality, constituted in the 19th century, was eventually merged into the expanding Madras (now Chennai) Corporation.
Saidapet falls within the jurisdiction of the Greater Chennai Corporation and is divided across several municipal wards. It is the headquarters of Saidapet taluk, one of the revenue taluks of Chennai district. The locality is also a State Legislative Assembly constituency (Saidapet Assembly constituency) returning a member to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, and falls within the Chennai South parliamentary constituency.
Saidapet is served by the Saidapet railway station on the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu section of the Chennai Suburban Railway operated by Southern Railway. The Saidapet metro station, located on the Chennai Metro network, provides further connectivity. The neighbourhood is also a major bus transit point, with services from the Metropolitan Transport Corporation linking it to most parts of the city. Anna Salai, Jones Road and the road to Guindy meet in the locality, and the Kathipara Junction grade separator at nearby Guindy connects Saidapet to GST Road, the airport and the Inner Ring Road.
Saidapet has a long association with teacher education in Tamil Nadu. The Government Teachers Training College, established in the 19th century, is among the older institutions of its kind in southern India. Other educational institutions in and around Saidapet include schools run by the state government and various private and aided managements.
Commercial activity in Saidapet is concentrated along Anna Salai and the streets around the railway and bus stations, with retail markets, small businesses and offices. Notable landmarks include the Saidapet courts complex, the taluk office, the Maraimalai Adigalar Bridge over the Adyar, and several long-established places of worship. The locality lies adjacent to the integrated transport hub at Guindy and the institutional belt that includes the Indian Institute of Technology Madras campus across the river.
