Shinde belonged to the generation of Indian cricketers whose careers spanned the transition from late colonial-era cricket to the early years of independent India's participation in international competition. Like many of his contemporaries, he developed his game through the domestic first-class circuit before earning national selection.
Shinde played for India at Test level as a leg-spin bowler. Wrist-spin was an important component of Indian bowling attacks of the period, and Shinde was one of the spinners chosen during India's early Test campaigns at home and abroad.
Shinde is remembered as one of the early Test cricketers of independent India. His career, though relatively short, forms part of the historical record of Indian cricket in the immediate post-independence era, a formative period for the national side.
