In addition to the flagship Kattankulathur campus, SRM Institute of Science and Technology operates several other campuses in and around Chennai and in other parts of India, including:
The university provides undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across multiple faculties. Major academic divisions include:
Admission to undergraduate engineering programmes is conducted through a national-level entrance test, the SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination (SRMJEEE), along with admissions based on other recognised national tests for specific programmes.
SRM Institute of Science and Technology maintains research centres in areas such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, materials science, and information and communication technologies. It has entered into academic and research collaborations with several Indian and foreign universities for student exchange, twinning programmes, and joint research initiatives. The university also operates a teaching hospital at Kattankulathur for clinical education and patient care.
The institution is recognised by the University Grants Commission and its professional programmes are approved by the relevant statutory bodies, including the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for engineering and management, the National Medical Commission for medicine, and the Bar Council of India for law. SRM Institute of Science and Technology has been ranked in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Ministry of Education across categories such as universities, engineering, and medical institutions.
As one of the prominent private deemed universities in Tamil Nadu, SRM Institute of Science and Technology has played a notable role in the expansion of private higher education in southern India since the 1980s and 1990s. Its concentration of engineering, medical, and allied programmes on a single campus at Kattankulathur, combined with the proximity to Chennai's industrial and IT corridor, has made it a significant centre for technical and professional education in the region.
