SPI Cinemas grew out of the Sathyam Cinemas property in Chennai, a single-screen theatre that was redeveloped into a multi-screen complex and became one of the most prominent cinema halls in the city. Building on the brand recognition of Sathyam, the company expanded into a chain of multiplexes, positioning itself in the upper-tier segment of the Indian exhibition market through emphasis on auditorium design, food and beverage offerings, and customer service.
SPI's properties have been organised under several brands aimed at different formats and audience segments:
The chain has also been associated with the online ticketing brand ticketnew.com.
In 2018, PVR Limited announced the acquisition of SPI Cinemas. The deal gave PVR a substantially larger footprint in South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where SPI's screens were concentrated. Following the transaction, SPI's properties continued to operate under their existing brand names while becoming part of the PVR group.
SPI Cinemas is regarded as an influential operator in the evolution of the modern multiplex experience in South India. Its Chennai properties, in particular, have been associated with high-profile film releases, premieres and audio launches in the Tamil film industry, and helped set service and design benchmarks for premium cinema exhibition in the region.
