Rudrapur lies in the plains of the Terai belt, where the Himalayan foothills give way to the Indo-Gangetic plain. The terrain around the city is flat and fertile, drained by tributaries of the Ganga river system, and the area is historically agricultural, with rice and wheat as the dominant crops. The city is connected by road and rail to Haldwani, Kashipur, Bareilly, and the state capital Dehradun.
The town is traditionally said to have been founded in the late 16th century during the reign of the Chand dynasty of Kumaon, and is named after Rudra Chand. For much of its later history, Rudrapur remained a small settlement in the Terai. In the years following Indian independence, the surrounding forests and marshlands of the Terai were cleared and reclaimed for agriculture, and large numbers of refugees and ex-servicemen, including Punjabi and Bengali settlers, were resettled in the region. This transformed the demographic and economic character of the area.
Until the year 2000, Rudrapur was part of Uttar Pradesh. With the creation of the new state of Uttaranchal (renamed Uttarakhand in 2007) on 9 November 2000, Rudrapur became part of the new state and was designated the headquarters of the newly formed Udham Singh Nagar district.
Rudrapur is a major industrial hub of Uttarakhand. The State Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (SIDCUL) established a large integrated industrial estate at Pantnagar–Rudrapur in the 2000s, which attracted investment in automobile manufacturing, auto components, electronics, FMCG, and pharmaceuticals. The growth of the SIDCUL estate was supported by central excise and tax incentives extended to new industrial units in the hill state in the years following its creation.
Major manufacturing facilities operated in and around Rudrapur include units of Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Ashok Leyland, Nestlé India, Britannia, Dabur, and Parle, among others. Agro-based industries, including rice mills and sugar processing, also remain important to the local economy, reflecting the agricultural base of the surrounding Terai.
The neighbouring town of Pantnagar is home to Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, established in 1960 as India's first agricultural university and considered an important institution in the country's Green Revolution. Rudrapur itself hosts engineering, management, and polytechnic colleges, along with degree colleges affiliated to universities in Uttarakhand.
Rudrapur is served by Rudrapur City railway station and is connected by the broad-gauge network to cities including Lucknow, Delhi, and Kathgodam. National Highway 9 (formerly NH 87) passes through the city, linking it with Rampur to the south and Haldwani–Nainital to the north. The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport, a short distance from the city, which operates domestic flights.
Civic affairs in the city are managed by the Rudrapur Municipal Corporation. The city is the headquarters of Udham Singh Nagar district and hosts the offices of the District Magistrate and other district-level departments. Rudrapur is part of the Rudrapur (Vidhan Sabha) constituency in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly.
As the district headquarters of Udham Singh Nagar and as one of the largest cities of the Kumaon division, Rudrapur functions as an administrative, industrial, and commercial centre for the Terai region. Its growth since 2000 reflects the wider economic transformation of the plains districts of Uttarakhand.
