Ronit Roy was born in Nagpur into a Bengali family and was raised partly in Mumbai. His younger brother, Rohit Roy, is also an actor in Hindi television and film. Before entering the entertainment industry, Ronit worked in hospitality and modelling.
Roy made his film debut as a romantic lead in Jaan Tere Naam (1992), directed by Deepak Balraj Vij. The film was a moderate commercial success, but his subsequent film appearances through the 1990s did not establish him as a leading man, and he transitioned to television by the end of the decade.
Roy achieved widespread recognition with Balaji Telefilms' Kasautii Zindagii Kay, which began on STAR Plus in 2001, where he played Mr. Bajaj. He had earlier appeared in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as Mihir Virani for a brief stint. From 2006 to 2009, he played the lead role of Rishabh Bajaj in Zee TV's Kasamh Se, which became one of the channel's most popular shows during that period.
Between 2010 and 2016, he portrayed defence advocate K. D. Pathak in Sony Entertainment Television's courtroom drama Adaalat, a role with which he is closely identified.
Roy returned to Hindi cinema as a character actor in the 2010s, drawing critical attention for his performance as the abusive father in Vikramaditya Motwane's Udaan (2010), which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival. He followed this with notable roles in 2 States (2014), Ugly (2014, directed by Anurag Kashyap), Kaabil (2017) and Student of the Year (2012).
In streaming productions, Roy played Rajendra Singh in Amazon Prime Video's Bandish Bandits (2020) and appeared in Hostages (Disney+ Hotstar) and Kaun Banegi Shikharwati (ZEE5).
Roy founded a private security firm that has provided personal protection services to several Hindi film personalities. He has also worked occasionally as a producer and host for Indian television programmes.
Roy has received multiple Indian Television Academy Awards and Indian Telly Awards for his performances in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Kasamh Se and Adaalat. He has been nominated at film award ceremonies for his supporting performance in Udaan.
Roy is regarded as one of the few Indian performers to have sustained leading-man status across both prime-time Hindi television and mainstream Hindi cinema. His shift from romantic lead to character actor, particularly his portrayals of authoritarian or morally complex figures, is frequently cited in discussions of the maturing landscape of Hindi screen acting in the 2010s.
Roy married actress Neelam Singh in 2003; the couple has two children. He resides in Mumbai.
