The film centres on Roja, a young woman from a village in Tamil Nadu, who is married to Rishi Kumar, a cryptologist working with the Indian government. When Rishi is sent to Kashmir on a confidential assignment, he is kidnapped by a militant group seeking the release of their leader. Roja, unfamiliar with Hindi or the region, struggles through bureaucratic and language barriers to secure her husband's release. The narrative juxtaposes personal love and devotion with themes of nationhood, separatism and the human cost of conflict.
Mani Ratnam wrote and directed the film under the banner of Kavithalayaa Productions, founded by his mentor K. Balachander. Roja marked the feature film debut of A. R. Rahman as a composer, after his earlier career in advertising jingles. The cinematography was handled by Santosh Sivan, whose visuals of the Kashmir Valley contributed significantly to the film's atmosphere. Madhoo, the female lead, was introduced to Tamil cinema through this film, while Arvind Swamy, who had appeared in earlier Mani Ratnam projects, achieved wider recognition with his performance.
The soundtrack, composed by A. R. Rahman with lyrics by Vairamuthu, became one of the most influential albums in Indian film music. Songs such as "Chinna Chinna Aasai", "Kadhal Rojave", "Pudhu Vellai Mazhai" and "Rukmani Rukmani" achieved widespread popularity. The album is often credited with redefining the soundscape of Indian film music in the 1990s through its blend of classical, folk and electronic elements.
Roja was released in Tamil in 1992 and was subsequently dubbed into Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam, broadening its reach across India. The Hindi-dubbed version, released in 1993, played a significant role in establishing Mani Ratnam and A. R. Rahman as nationally recognised names. The film received critical acclaim for its direction, performances and music, and proved commercially successful.
Roja was included by Time magazine in its list of "10 Best Soundtracks" of all time in 2005, citing Rahman's score.
Roja is considered the first installment in Mani Ratnam's informal "terrorism trilogy", followed by Bombay (1995) and Dil Se.. (1998), each examining political violence through a personal love story. The film's depiction of Kashmir and militancy has been the subject of academic discussion, including in postcolonial and cultural studies, with scholars analysing its construction of nationalism. Beyond its political themes, the film is credited with launching A. R. Rahman's film career and reshaping the soundtrack industry in India.
