Dhawan came up through the domestic cricket structure in Himachal Pradesh, a state association that competes in tournaments organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He has been a long-standing member of the Himachal Pradesh squad in formats such as the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
As an all-rounder, Dhawan has contributed with both bat and ball in Indian domestic cricket. His performances at the state level led to selection in the Indian national side, where he featured in limited-overs internationals for India. He has also been part of franchise squads in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
