Renault entered the Indian market in the 2000s, initially through a joint venture with Mahindra & Mahindra to produce and sell the Logan sedan. Following the conclusion of that arrangement, Renault restructured its Indian operations as a wholly owned subsidiary and aligned its manufacturing with the global Renault–Nissan partnership. The Chennai-area plant, set up in collaboration with Nissan, became the production hub for both brands' India-built models as well as for select export markets.
Renault India operates through a network of dealerships and service outlets spread across the country. Vehicles are produced at the Renault-Nissan Automotive India plant near Chennai, which also serves as an export base for left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive markets in Asia, Africa and elsewhere. Research, design and engineering inputs for several models sold in India and other emerging markets are supported by Renault Nissan Technology and Business Centre India (RNTBCI), based in Chennai.
Renault India is among the European automotive brands with a sustained manufacturing footprint in India. Its strategy has focused on affordable, locally engineered models built on the Renault–Nissan CMF-A and CMF-A+ platforms, which are tailored for cost-sensitive emerging markets. The Chennai-based manufacturing and engineering ecosystem associated with Renault and Nissan has contributed to India's role as an export hub within the alliance's global production network.
