The college functions as a constituent of the higher education network of Odisha and is affiliated to Berhampur University for the purpose of degree conferment, while exercising autonomy in matters of curriculum design, internal assessment and examinations. Conferment of autonomous status allows the institution to frame its own syllabi within broad regulatory guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the affiliating university.
The college offers three-year undergraduate (Bachelor's) programmes in the faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce, along with selected postgraduate courses. Departments typically include the humanities (such as Odia, English, History, Political Science and Economics), the natural sciences (such as Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Mathematics) and Commerce. Admission is conducted through the Odisha state Student Academic Management System (SAMS) common application portal used by government and aided colleges in the state.
The campus is situated within Rayagada town, which lies in the Eastern Ghats region of southern Odisha. Rayagada is connected by the East Coast Railway and by national and state highways, and serves as an administrative and educational centre for a region with a substantial Scheduled Tribe population, including Kondh and Soura communities.
As one of the few autonomous colleges in the southern Odisha tribal belt, the institution plays a notable role in expanding access to higher education for students from Rayagada and adjoining districts such as Koraput, Kalahandi and Gajapati. Its autonomous status places it among the senior general degree colleges of the region in terms of academic standing.
