Ravichandran Ashwin is an Indian international cricketer known primarily as a right-arm off-spin bowler and lower-order right-handed batter. Representing India across all three formats, he became one of the leading wicket-takers in Test cricket and is widely regarded as among the most accomplished spin bowlers of his generation. He has also been a long-serving player in the Indian Premier League (IPL), turning out for franchises including Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals.

Ashwin was born and brought up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was educated at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and later at St. Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. He pursued an undergraduate degree in information technology at the SSN College of Engineering, affiliated to Anna University, before committing to professional cricket. Originally an opening batter in his junior cricket days, he moved to off-spin bowling after recurring injuries, eventually developing into a front-line spinner.
Ashwin made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy in 2006–07. He has been a mainstay of the Tamil Nadu side across formats, contributing to their campaigns in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He has also represented South Zone in the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy.
Ashwin first played in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings, where he was part of the squads that won the title in 2010 and 2011, and contributed to the franchise's Champions League Twenty20 victories. He later moved to Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), where he served as captain from 2018 to 2019. He subsequently played for Delhi Capitals, reaching the IPL final in 2020, before joining Rajasthan Royals.
Ashwin debuted for India in limited-overs cricket in June 2010. He was part of the Indian squad that won the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, played on home soil, and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy in England. He has been a regular contributor in T20 internationals over multiple cycles of the ICC T20 World Cup.
Ashwin's Test debut came in November 2011 against the West Indies at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, where he marked his arrival with a five-wicket haul and a half-century. He quickly established himself as India's premier spinner, particularly in home conditions, and developed a reputation for adapting his action and variations to different surfaces. He has recorded multiple instances of taking a five-wicket haul and a century in the same Test match, a rare all-round feat.
Ashwin's bowling is characterised by classical off-spin combined with a wide range of variations, including the carrom ball and subtle changes of pace and release. He is known for his analytical approach to the game, often discussing field placements, match-ups and tactical adjustments in detail. As a lower-order batter, he has scored multiple Test centuries, several of them in pressure situations, contributing to India's lower-order resilience.
His longevity, particularly at home, has made him central to India's success in home Test series across more than a decade. He is also recognised for his role in popularising cricket analysis through his digital content and commentary work.
Ashwin is married to Prithi Narayanan, a long-time family acquaintance, and the couple have two daughters. He is based in Chennai and has been involved in coaching and mentoring initiatives in Tamil Nadu cricket. He runs a cricket academy and has authored an autobiographical work reflecting on his career.
