Patel came through the Indian domestic cricket system, playing in the Ranji Trophy and other inter-zonal tournaments organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Like many fast bowlers of his generation, he competed in the major domestic tournaments during a period when Indian cricket was producing a steady flow of seam bowlers for consideration at the higher levels.
Patel represented his state side in the Ranji Trophy and appeared in zonal competitions such as the Duleep Trophy, where players are selected on a regional basis (North, South, East, West and Central Zones). His career was contained primarily within the Indian domestic circuit.
Patel's career is most often referenced in discussions of player conduct in Indian first-class cricket, and his name appears in retrospectives of Duleep Trophy history. Beyond such references, he forms part of the broader pool of domestic seam bowlers who supported state and zonal sides through the 1980s.
