Indian domestic cricket in the period covering Nimbalkar's career was organised primarily around the Ranji Trophy, the national first-class championship inaugurated in 1934, along with regional tournaments such as the Bombay Pentangular and various princely state matches. Players from western India, including Maharashtra and the former princely states in the Deccan, were prominent contributors to this structure.
Nimbalkar's career was situated within the network of teams that drew on cricketers from Maharashtra and neighbouring regions. The Nimbalkar surname is particularly associated with this period of Indian cricket through his contemporaries and relatives, several of whom recorded notable performances in domestic competition.
While not among the most internationally recognised Indian cricketers of the era, Nimbalkar represents the broad pool of first-class players who built up Indian domestic cricket in the decades surrounding Independence in 1947. Such players formed the base from which the national side was selected and helped to consolidate the Ranji Trophy as the principal vehicle of competitive cricket in the country.
