Praggnanandhaa was born in Chennai to Rameshbabu, a branch manager at TNSC Bank, and Nagalakshmi, a homemaker. He was introduced to chess by his elder sister Vaishali, who later also became a Grandmaster, making them one of the few brother–sister Grandmaster pairs in chess history. He has trained for much of his career under Grandmaster R. B. Ramesh at the Chess Gurukul academy in Chennai.
Praggnanandhaa is known for an aggressive yet flexible style, with strong tactical calculation and confidence in sharp middlegame positions. Commentators have noted his composure under time pressure and his ability to create complications in apparently quiet positions, making him a difficult opponent across classical, rapid and blitz formats.
Praggnanandhaa's rise has been seen as part of a broader generational surge in Indian chess that includes players such as D. Gukesh, Nihal Sarin, Arjun Erigaisi and his sister R. Vaishali. His performances against the world's top players, particularly Magnus Carlsen, have drawn significant attention to Indian chess and contributed to India's emergence as a leading chess nation. The success of the family — with both siblings becoming Grandmasters — has also been widely cited as an example of the depth of chess infrastructure in Tamil Nadu.
