The institution traces its origins to Shri Ramdeobaba College of Engineering and Management, an autonomous engineering college in Nagpur that built a reputation in undergraduate and postgraduate technical education. The college operated for decades as an affiliated institution before its transition into a private university enabled it to design its own academic structure, offer interdisciplinary programmes, and award its own degrees.
The parent body, the Shri Ramdeobaba Sarvajanik Samiti, is a public charitable trust based in Nagpur that runs several educational institutions in the city. The university's campus is situated in the Gittikhadan area of Nagpur, in the western part of the city.
The university offers programmes primarily in engineering, technology, computer applications, and management, continuing the disciplines that were the strength of its predecessor college. Coursework spans bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, with departments covering core engineering branches such as mechanical, civil, electrical, and electronics engineering, alongside computer science, information technology, and business administration.
As a private university in central India, Ramdeobaba University is part of the broader expansion of higher education capacity in Maharashtra outside the traditional public university system. Its conversion from an autonomous college to a university reflects a wider trend in India where established institutions with strong academic records have been granted university status under state private university acts, allowing greater curricular flexibility and direct degree-granting authority.
