Ramachandrapuram lies to the west of Hyderabad, in proximity to areas such as Patancheru, Miyapur, BHEL X-Roads and Lingampally. The township is connected to central Hyderabad by the National Highway corridor leading towards Sangareddy and by the suburban road network passing through Miyapur. The Lingampally and Hafeezpet stations on the Hyderabad suburban railway provide rail connectivity for residents of the township.
The township grew around the BHEL Ramachandrapuram unit, one of the major manufacturing plants of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. The plant manufactures equipment for the power, oil and gas, and process industries, including components such as compressors, pulverisers, heat exchangers, oil rigs and gas turbine auxiliaries. As is common with large public sector undertakings in India, BHEL developed an integrated residential township adjoining the factory to house its employees and their families, complete with schools, healthcare facilities, markets, places of worship and recreation clubs.
For census purposes, Ramachandrapuram has been classified as a census town, indicating an urban character distinct from the surrounding rural panchayats. Within the BHEL premises, township services such as housing, water supply, sanitation, internal roads and welfare amenities are administered by BHEL itself, while areas outside the company estate fall under local civic bodies in the Sangareddy district administrative framework.
Ramachandrapuram is one of several BHEL townships across India and represents the model of self-contained industrial settlements built around major public sector units in the post-independence period. The presence of the BHEL plant has influenced the urban growth of the western Hyderabad corridor, contributing to the development of nearby neighbourhoods such as Miyapur, Chandanagar and Lingampally, which expanded rapidly with the broader growth of Hyderabad's information technology and industrial belts.
