Ram Kapoor was trained in acting and entered the entertainment industry through Hindi television in the late 1990s. He is married to actress Gautami Gadgil, who is professionally known as Gautami Kapoor; the two met while working in television and have two children. The couple has occasionally appeared together in television projects and advertisements.
Kapoor's early television work included the Star Plus series Heena and the family drama Ghar Ek Mandir. He gained wider recognition with Kasamh Se on Zee TV, where he played the role of Jai Walia, a wealthy industrialist. The character was later carried forward in a different setting in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain (2011–2014) on Sony TV, where his pairing with Sakshi Tanwar received considerable attention for portraying a middle-aged romance, a subject not commonly central to Indian soap operas at the time.
He has also hosted and appeared in reality and game-show formats, and featured in the historical drama Karenge Daddyji Ki Vidaai and the comedy series Dil Sambhal Jaa Zara, among other productions.
Kapoor has appeared in Hindi films including Monsoon Wedding (2001), directed by Mira Nair, Udaan (2010), directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, Student of the Year (2012), directed by Karan Johar, and Humshakals (2014), directed by Sajid Khan. His film roles have generally been in supporting capacities.
With the growth of OTT platforms in India, Kapoor has taken on roles in web series, expanding his work beyond traditional television.
Kapoor is often associated with portrayals of mature, urbane male leads, frequently in domestic and corporate dramas. The success of Bade Achhe Lagte Hain is considered significant in Indian television history for centring its narrative on a relationship between adults in their thirties and forties, contributing to a brief shift in storytelling conventions on Hindi general entertainment channels. He has also been the subject of public attention for his weight transformation, which he has discussed in interviews in the context of fitness and health.
Ram Kapoor married Gautami Gadgil in 2003. The couple lives in Mumbai and has a daughter and a son. Outside acting, Kapoor has expressed interest in automobiles and has been associated with various lifestyle endorsements.
