Rajkumar Santoshi is an Indian film director, screenwriter and producer who works primarily in Hindi cinema. He is widely regarded for his ability to work across genres, having directed action dramas, romantic comedies, courtroom dramas and political biopics. His films of the 1990s, including Ghayal, Damini, Ghatak and Andaz Apna Apna, are considered landmark works of that decade in Hindi cinema.

Rajkumar Santoshi belongs to a film family. His father, P. L. Santoshi, was a noted filmmaker and lyricist of the 1940s and 1950s Hindi film industry, associated with films of the Bombay Talkies era and after. Rajkumar Santoshi began his career as an assistant to filmmaker Govind Nihalani, working on socially conscious projects that influenced his own directorial sensibility, particularly in handling realism, action and dialogue-driven drama.
Santoshi made his directorial debut with Ghayal (1990), starring Sunny Deol. The film was a major commercial and critical success, winning the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and several Filmfare Awards, including Best Director for Santoshi.
He followed this with Damini (1993), a courtroom drama starring Meenakshi Seshadri, Rishi Kapoor and Sunny Deol, which addressed the issue of justice for survivors of sexual assault. The film won several National Film Awards and brought Santoshi a second Filmfare Award for Best Director.
In 1994, he directed Andaz Apna Apna, a screwball comedy starring Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor. Although it had a modest theatrical run, it has since become a cult classic of Hindi cinema. He returned to action drama with Ghatak: Lethal (1996), again with Sunny Deol, and China Gate (1998), an ensemble action film inspired by the framework of The Magnificent Seven.
Santoshi directed Pukar (2000), starring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit, which won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration. He went on to make Lajja (2001), a multi-narrative film on the status of women in Indian society, and The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002), starring Ajay Devgn, which received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and Best Actor for Devgn.
This phase also included Khakee (2004), a police drama with Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, and the romantic comedy Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) with Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, which was a commercial success.
Subsequent directorial projects included Phata Poster Nikhla Hero (2013) with Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D'Cruz. In 2023, he directed Gandhi Godse – Ek Yudh, an ideological drama based on a play by Asgar Wajahat that imagines a confrontation between Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse.

Santoshi's work is notable for combining commercial film grammar with socially engaged themes such as custodial violence, gender justice, communal harmony, the freedom struggle and police accountability. He is considered one of the few mainstream Hindi filmmakers of his generation to have successfully alternated between mass entertainers and issue-based cinema. His ability to draw strong performances from leading actors and to write dialogue-driven set pieces has made several of his films benchmarks within their respective genres.
