Rajendra Prasad was born in Narasaraopet in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. He developed an early interest in theatre and cinema and moved into the Telugu film industry in the late 1970s, initially playing supporting parts before transitioning to lead roles in the early 1980s.
He made his debut as a lead actor at the start of the 1980s, gradually building a reputation in romantic and comedic roles. His timing, dialogue delivery and ability to underplay humour brought him a steady following in Andhra Pradesh.
Through the late 1980s and 1990s, Rajendra Prasad emerged as one of Telugu cinema's most bankable comedy heroes. Films directed by E. V. V. Satyanarayana, Jandhyala and Vamsy showcased his strengths in situational comedy and middle-class family settings. Movies such as Aha Naa Pellanta! (1987), Mayalodu, Erra Mandaaram and Ladies Tailor consolidated his standing as a leading man capable of carrying an entire film on comic energy.
From the 2000s onward, Rajendra Prasad transitioned into character and supporting roles in major Telugu productions. He earned wide critical appreciation for the National Film Award–winning Telugu feature Mee Sreyobhilashi (2007), as well as roles in successful contemporary films, where he played fathers, mentors and morally driven elders.
He has hosted television talk shows and has been associated with various stage and award functions in the Telugu cultural sphere, contributing to mentoring and screen presence outside cinema.
Rajendra Prasad is regarded as one of the principal comedy heroes of Telugu cinema in the post-1980s era, alongside contemporaries such as Naresh and Bhanuchander. His films, often built around middle-class households, marriage, and social satire, helped define a distinct strand of Telugu light cinema that bridged the gap between mass-market entertainers and family-oriented storytelling. His later turn into character roles has extended his relevance into a new generation of Telugu films.
Rajendra Prasad lives in Hyderabad and has remained closely associated with the Telugu film industry's professional bodies and welfare initiatives.
