RTU was established by the Government of Rajasthan through an Act of the State Legislature to coordinate technical education in the state. Before its formation, engineering and technical colleges in Rajasthan were largely affiliated to the University of Rajasthan or other general universities. The creation of a dedicated technical university was intended to bring uniformity in curricula, examinations and standards across the rapidly growing number of technical institutions in Rajasthan.
The university is headed by a Vice-Chancellor, supported by a Registrar, Deans of various faculties, and statutory bodies including the Board of Management, Academic Council and Finance Committee. Its main campus is situated on the outskirts of Kota, a city long associated with technical and competitive examination coaching.
RTU functions in two roles: as an affiliating university for hundreds of colleges across Rajasthan, and as a teaching university through its University College of Engineering and other departments on the Kota campus.
A wide network of government, government-aided and private engineering colleges, polytechnic institutions and management institutes across Rajasthan are affiliated to RTU. The university prescribes the syllabus, conducts end-semester examinations and awards degrees to students of these affiliated colleges.
The main campus of RTU is in Kota, with academic blocks, administrative buildings, laboratories, a central library, hostels for boys and girls, sports grounds, and faculty and staff residences. The library houses textbooks, reference works, technical journals and digital resources accessible to students and faculty.
Departmental laboratories support practical instruction across engineering disciplines. The campus also includes computer centres, workshops and seminar halls used for academic and co-curricular activities.
Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes at RTU and its affiliated colleges are largely conducted through centralised counselling based on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) score, in line with the admission policy of the Government of Rajasthan. Postgraduate admissions are made through national-level tests such as the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for M.Tech and the Common Admission Test (CAT) or state-level tests for MBA, followed by counselling.
Doctoral admissions are conducted by the university through its own entrance test and interview process, governed by the relevant Ph.D. ordinance.
Student activities at RTU include technical festivals, cultural events, sports tournaments and departmental societies. Engineering branches typically organise technical symposia, project exhibitions, coding contests and workshops. Cultural festivals feature music, dance, drama and literary competitions, while annual sports meets bring together students from the campus and affiliated colleges.
Professional student chapters affiliated to bodies such as the Institution of Engineers (India) and various IEEE-style technical societies are active on the campus. Training and placement activities are coordinated by a dedicated cell that interacts with recruiters from the information technology, manufacturing, infrastruct
