RTU was established by the Government of Rajasthan to consolidate technical education in the state under a single affiliating body. Prior to its creation, technical institutes in Rajasthan were affiliated with various general universities. The new university was set up to streamline curricula, examinations, and standards across engineering and technology programmes in the state.
The main campus is situated in Kota, a city already known as a major centre for coaching and higher education in northern India. The university operates through its own university teaching departments while also serving as the affiliating authority for a large number of constituent and private colleges.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. Its academic portfolio typically includes:
Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes in colleges affiliated with RTU are generally conducted through state-level and national entrance examinations, with counselling administered by the relevant Rajasthan state authority.
As a state university, RTU is governed under a state legislative act of Rajasthan. Its administrative structure includes a Chancellor (the Governor of Rajasthan, ex officio), a Vice-Chancellor as the chief executive and academic officer, and statutory bodies such as the Board of Management, Academic Council, and Finance Committee. The Department of Technical Education, Government of Rajasthan, exercises broad policy oversight over the university's functioning.
RTU affiliates a substantial number of engineering and technology colleges spread across Rajasthan, including government engineering colleges and private institutions. These colleges follow the curriculum and examination system prescribed by the university. The university periodically revises syllabi to align with the model curricula of bodies such as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
RTU plays a central role in shaping engineering and technical education in Rajasthan. By acting as a single affiliating university, it has standardised technical curricula, examinations, and degree nomenclature across the state. Its location in Kota links the university with one of India's largest concentrations of students preparing for engineering and medical entrance examinations.
