RSRTC was constituted under the Road Transport Corporations Act, 1950, a central legislation that enabled Indian states to set up dedicated corporations for operating public bus services. Like its counterparts in other states, the corporation was established to provide affordable, regular and area-wide passenger transport, particularly to regions where private operators offered limited or irregular services.
The corporation functions under the administrative control of the Department of Transport of the Government of Rajasthan. Its operations are organised through a network of regional and depot offices spread across the state, with major operational hubs in cities such as Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer, Bikaner and Bharatpur.
RSRTC operates several categories of bus services to cater to different passenger segments:
The corporation also runs services in support of state schemes that provide concessional or free travel to specified categories of passengers, such as students, senior citizens, women on certain routes, freedom fighters and persons with disabilities, as notified by the state government from time to time.
The RSRTC fleet consists primarily of buses operated through state-owned depots, supplemented in some cases by buses run on contract or kilometre-scheme arrangements with private operators. The corporation maintains central workshops and depot-level maintenance facilities for fleet upkeep.
Major bus terminals operated or used by RSRTC include the Sindhi Camp inter-state bus terminal in Jaipur, along with terminals in Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer and Bikaner. Online ticket booking is offered through the corporation's website and mobile platforms, in addition to counter sales at bus stations.
As one of the principal providers of surface public transport in Rajasthan, RSRTC plays an important role in connecting the state's geographically dispersed population, including remote desert areas of western Rajasthan and tribal regions in the south. It supports tourism by linking heritage cities and pilgrimage sites, and contributes to the state's transport policy goals of accessibility and affordability.
