Chahar hails from Rajasthan and emerged through age-group cricket before establishing himself in the state's senior side. He developed as a wrist-spinner at a time when Indian cricket was actively scouting leg-spinners for the limited-overs formats, which provided him an early pathway into franchise and national reckoning.
Chahar plays first-class, List A and Twenty20 cricket for Rajasthan in India's domestic competitions, including the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His leg-spin, characterised by a quick, flat trajectory and use of the googly, has been his principal asset across formats.
Chahar made his Indian Premier League debut with the Rising Pune Supergiant before moving to the Mumbai Indians, with whom he became a regular member of the side as a frontline spin option in the middle overs. He was part of Mumbai Indians' title-winning campaigns. He was later acquired by the Punjab Kings in the IPL auction.
Chahar made his Twenty20 International debut for India during the tour of the West Indies in 2019. He went on to feature for India in further white-ball assignments, including being named in the Indian squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup held in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
Chahar is regarded as a containing wrist-spinner who relies on accuracy and pace variations rather than big turn. His emergence formed part of a broader trend in Indian limited-overs cricket of using two leg-spinning all-format options alongside specialist finger-spinners.
