The Race series is characterised by its emphasis on stylised action sequences, luxury settings, fast cars, and narratives that pivot on shifting loyalties between siblings, business partners, and lovers. Each instalment features ensemble casts, with characters frequently revealed to harbour hidden motives. The films are set primarily outside India, including locations in South Africa, Turkey, and Abu Dhabi, lending the franchise a globalised aesthetic uncommon in mainstream Hindi cinema of its period.
The first film, directed by Abbas–Mustan, was released in 2008. It starred Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor, and Sameera Reddy. The plot revolves around two stepbrothers, Ranvir and Rajiv Singh, who run a horse-breeding business in Durban, South Africa, and are drawn into a web of insurance fraud, romance, and murder. The music was composed by Pritam, with songs that became commercially popular.
The sequel, also helmed by Abbas–Mustan, was released in January 2013. It featured Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor reprising their roles, joined by John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Ameesha Patel. The story shifts to a European backdrop and centres on the underworld operations of Armaan Malik, a powerful crime lord. The film expands the scale of action set pieces and continues the franchise's signature use of plot twists.
The third instalment marked a change in direction, with Remo D'Souza taking over as director. Released in June 2018 to coincide with Eid, it starred Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Jacqueline Fernandez, Daisy Shah, and Saqib Saleem. The plot follows the Singh family, an arms-dealing dynasty operating from Al Shifa, with internal rivalries leading to a complex sequence of betrayals. The film opened to commercial success at the box office despite mixed-to-negative critical reviews.
The Race films have been commercially significant for Tips Industries and have contributed to the popularity of the slick, internationally-set action thriller in mainstream Hindi cinema during the late 2000s and 2010s. While critical reception has varied, the films have generally performed strongly at the box office, and songs from the soundtracks—particularly tracks by Pritam—have remained widely recognised. The franchise is often cited as an example of the "masala thriller" template, blending romance, action, and crime in glossy production values.
