Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata

Overview

Rabindra Bharati University is a public research university located in Kolkata, India. It was established on 8 May 1962 under the Rabindra Bharati Act passed by the Government of West Bengal in 1961, with the founding of the institution timed to mark the birth centenary of the poet Rabindranath Tagore.

The university is situated at Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the ancestral home of the Tagore family in north Kolkata. The historic premises link the institution closely with the cultural and literary legacy associated with Rabindranath Tagore.

Rabindra Bharati University offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across multiple disciplines. Programmes in Performing Arts and Visual Arts are offered under the Faculty of Fine Arts, while subjects in humanities, social sciences and related areas are offered under the Faculty of Arts. The university also undertakes research activities in these fields.

Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the university.
