The group traces its lineage to the RPG Enterprises founded by Rama Prasad Goenka, which was itself an outgrowth of the larger Goenka family business interests built up through the twentieth century in eastern India. Following a division of business responsibilities within the family, Sanjiv Goenka, the younger son of Rama Prasad Goenka, came to head a distinct cluster of companies, which was reorganised and rebranded as the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group.
The group's power business is anchored by CESC Limited, the integrated electricity utility that generates and distributes power in Kolkata and Howrah. CESC and its associated companies also operate generation assets and distribution franchises in other parts of India.
Through Phillips Carbon Black Limited (PCBL), the group is among the major producers of carbon black, used in tyres, rubber goods and specialty applications, with manufacturing operations in India and overseas.
The group's retail arm Spencer's Retail operates supermarket and hypermarket stores across Indian cities, and traces its origins to one of the country's oldest retail chains. The FMCG portfolio includes packaged foods and beverages under brands such as Too Yumm!, marketed by Guiltfree Industries.
The group has interests in television and digital media, including Saregama India, one of India's oldest music labels with a substantial catalogue of recorded music, and associated content ventures.
The group owns the Lucknow Super Giants, an Indian Premier League cricket franchise based in Lucknow, which began competing in the IPL from the 2022 season. It has also been associated with other sporting properties in Indian cricket and football at various times.
Other businesses include agribusiness, infrastructure, and education and skill-development initiatives undertaken through group institutions and foundations.
Sanjiv Goenka serves as chairman of the group. His son Shashwat Goenka is associated with the retail and FMCG businesses. The group's listed companies are managed through professional boards in line with Indian corporate governance norms.
The RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group is among the larger Kolkata-headquartered conglomerates and is significant for the role of CESC in supplying electricity to the Kolkata metropolitan area, for Phillips Carbon Black's position in the global carbon black industry, and for Saregama's custodianship of an extensive Indian music archive.
