The series was developed by 4 Lions Films, the production company headed by television producer Gul Khan, which has been associated with several long-running Hindi serials on Star Plus and Zee TV. Qubool Hai was conceived as a romantic drama set against the backdrop of a Muslim joint family, a setting relatively less explored on Indian prime-time fiction at the time of its launch. The narrative drew on themes of arranged marriage, sibling rivalry, identity, and reincarnation, which became a recurring device in later phases of the show.
The initial storyline followed Zoya Farooqui, a young Muslim woman raised in the United States who travels to Bhopal in search of her biological father, and Asad Ahmed Khan, a strong-willed lawyer from a traditional household in Bhopal. The early arcs centred on their evolving relationship, the workings of the Khan and Siddiqui families, and the conflicts arising from cultural, personal, and familial differences.
After the exit of the original lead pair, the show underwent a significant narrative leap and introduced reincarnation-based storylines featuring new characters portrayed by Surbhi Jyoti opposite Raqesh Bapat and, later, Karanvir Bohra. The final phase of the show shifted focus to a different family setting before its conclusion in March 2016.
The serial was shot primarily in Mumbai, with portions of its early storyline depicting locations in Bhopal. Music for the show, including its title track and signature romantic themes, was produced for the channel and gained popularity on television music platforms. The show experimented with multiple generation leaps and look-tests for new pairings, a strategy commonly used by Indian daily soaps to refresh ratings.
During its peak phase, Qubool Hai was among the highest-rated Hindi general entertainment serials and contributed significantly to Zee TV's prime-time ratings. The show is often cited as one of the few mainstream Indian soaps to centre a Muslim family as its primary household over an extended run. It also helped establish Surbhi Jyoti as a leading television actress and brought further popular recognition to Karan Singh Grover after his earlier work in Dill Mill Gayye.
The show and its cast received nominations and wins at Indian television award functions during its run, including recognition at the Zee Gold Awards and other industry ceremonies for performances, on-screen pairing, and popularity in the fiction category.
A digital reboot titled Qubool Hai 2.0 was released on ZEE5 in 2021, featuring Karan Singh Grover and Surbhi Jyoti reprising lead roles in a reimagined storyline. The reboot was produced as a limited web series and marked the return of the original lead pair to the franchise after several years.
