Purnea University is a collegiate public state university located in Purnia, Bihar, India. It was established by an act of the State Legislature in 2018 to cater to higher education needs in the eastern region of Bihar.
The university exercises territorial jurisdiction over the districts of Purnia, Araria, Kishanganj and Katihar. As a collegiate institution, its academic functions are distributed between the university's own departments and a network of affiliated colleges spread across these districts.
In keeping with the convention followed by state universities in Bihar, the Governor of Bihar serves as the Chancellor of Purnea University. The university administers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through its constituent and affiliated colleges, which contribute to the academic and research activities under its purview.
