The Publications Division was established as a media unit of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to make authentic information on India and its development available to a wide readership at affordable prices. Over the decades, it has built a substantial catalogue of titles in English, Hindi, and several other Indian languages, with an emphasis on works that document the country's freedom struggle, its constitutional and democratic institutions, and its cultural heritage.
The Division's output broadly falls into the following categories:
Titles are published in multiple Indian languages and are sold through the Division's sales emporia in major cities, online platforms, book fairs, and exhibitions.
As the Government of India's principal publisher, the Publications Division plays a documentary and archival role: many of its titles preserve primary material on India's freedom movement and on the lives of its political, social, and cultural leaders. Its low-priced editions have historically extended access to authoritative writing on Indian affairs to students, libraries, researchers, and the general public. Through periodicals such as Yojana and Kurukshetra, the Division also serves as a recognised reference source for civil services aspirants and policy readers.
