Pralhad Joshi

Overview

Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi (born 27 November 1962) is an Indian politician who has served as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha since 2004, representing the Dharwad constituency in Karnataka. He has been re-elected in the general elections of 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2024.

Joshi is currently serving as the 13th Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and the 10th Minister of New and Renewable Energy, having assumed these portfolios in 2024. From 2019 to 2024, he held the offices of Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Minister of Coal and Minister of Mines. He was also a member of the panel of chairpersons of the Lok Sabha between 2014 and 2018.

Within his party, Joshi served as the State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka from 2014 to 2016. He had earlier been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and came to public notice during the movement organised between 1992 and 1994 to hoist the Flag of India at the Idgah Maidan in Hubli, Karnataka. The Supreme Court of India subsequently upheld the order of the Karnataka High Court restoring the ownership of the maidan to the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation.
