Podanur lies to the south of central Coimbatore and forms part of the city's continuous built-up area. It is connected to the rest of Coimbatore by road and rail, and falls within the broader Kongu Nadu region of western Tamil Nadu. The terrain is part of the Coimbatore plateau, with the Western Ghats lying to the west and south-west.
The defining feature of Podanur is its railway junction. Podanur Junction historically predates Coimbatore Junction as a railway node and was established during the expansion of the Madras Railway through the region in the 19th century. It serves as a junction where the line from Coimbatore meets the line running towards Pollachi and onward to Palakkad and other destinations in Kerala.
The station handles passenger trains as well as freight movement, and a locomotive shed and railway colony have long been associated with the area, supporting the operations of the Southern Railway.
Podanur is administered as part of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation, having been incorporated into the expanded limits of the corporation. Civic services such as water supply, sanitation and roads fall under the corporation's jurisdiction.
The locality has traditionally had a mixed economy linked to railway employment, small-scale industry and trade serving the surrounding residential neighbourhoods. Coimbatore's wider industrial base in textiles, engineering and motor pumps influences employment in the suburb. Schools, places of worship and local markets serve the resident population.
