Chawla was born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, and emerged through the state's age-group cricket structure. He came to prominence as a teenage leg-spinner with the ability to bowl a sharp googly, drawing early attention while still in his mid-teens. He represented India in age-group competitions, including the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, before moving into senior cricket.
Chawla has been a long-serving member of the Uttar Pradesh squad in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He has been a frontline spin option for the side, contributing both wickets and lower-order runs. Over the course of his first-class career, he has accumulated several hundred wickets and is regarded as one of the more experienced wrist-spinners on the Indian domestic circuit.
Chawla made his Test debut for India against England in March 2006 at Mohali, becoming one of the youngest Indian leg-spinners to play Test cricket. He subsequently appeared in One Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals, including matches in major ICC tournaments. He was part of the Indian squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, which India won under captain M. S. Dhoni. He also featured in the ICC World Twenty20 in earlier editions of the tournament.
Chawla has had one of the longer IPL careers among Indian spinners. He began with Kings XI Punjab, where he was a regular for several seasons. He later joined Kolkata Knight Riders and was part of the squad that won the IPL title in 2014. He subsequently played for Chennai Super Kings, winning the IPL title with the franchise in 2021, and went on to feature for Mumbai Indians. He is among the leading wicket-takers in IPL history.
Chawla is primarily a leg-break bowler who relies on the googly as a key wicket-taking delivery, often bowling a quicker, flatter trajectory suited to limited-overs cricket. In the longer format, he gives the ball more flight and uses variations in pace. With the bat, he is capable of striking cleanly down the order, particularly in T20 cricket.
Chawla is among the small group of Indian leg-spinners to have played Test cricket in the 2000s and is one of the most experienced wrist-spinners in Indian Twenty20 cricket. His longevity in the IPL, combined with a sustained Ranji Trophy career for Uttar Pradesh, makes him a notable figure in the post-2000 generation of Indian spin bowlers.
